The Priory School seeks a School Nurse who will join our team and play a pivotal role in supporting student personal health and well-being. The School Nurse plays a vital role in supporting student health and well-being, managing the school Health Center, encompassing health education, and advocacy, while also collaborating with school staff and families to address student health needs. The School Nurse is responsible for promoting the health and well-being of students by providing direct nursing care for all students. Working in a boarding school environment, the School Nurse plays a crucial role in supporting students' physical and emotional health, managing chronic illnesses, responding to medical emergencies, and fostering a safe and healthy living environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

WITH STUDENTS AND CAREGIVERS

  • Provide human-centered, culturally-responsive, non-judgmental nursing assessment, treatment, and care for students with acute and chronic health conditions as a first responder in the event of a medical emergency or other crises.
  • Administer medications and treatments such as first aid and providing basic health care to students who become ill or injured during the school day in accordance with school policies and state regulations. This may include treating minor injuries, administering prescription and over-the-counter medications.
  • Maintain and uphold accurate and confidential student health records, documenting all visits, treatments, and follow-ups in accordance with state and federal policies of confidentiality. This includes documenting immunizations, allergies, ongoing health issues and records related to student medications,
  • Respond promptly to medical emergencies, assess conditions, and provide appropriate first aid or intervention.
  • Maintain and manage prescription medications in a secured manner for boarding students and provide procedures to administer medications even in instances where the Nurse is not readily available.
  • Collaborate with on campus athletic trainers, Wellness Counselors, and other outside healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive student care while using professional discretion to assess when it is appropriate to refer out for a higher level of care to ensure that students receive comprehensive healthcare.
  • Cultivate healthy relationships with students rooted in welcoming and trustworthy to serve as a resource to families on community health. This may include coordinating or executing emergency services, first aid, and providing communication to parents/caregivers, and school staff.
  • Design, organize, and implement health education programs covering topics such as blood drives, flu shot clinics, nutrition, hygiene, personal health practices.
  • Monitor and manage communicable disease outbreaks in coordination with local health authorities. Provide communication to caregivers if necessary.
  • Regularly update and deliver external-facing information to the wider school community.

WITH FACULTY, STAFF, AND ADMINISTRATION

  • Educate Residential Faculty staff and faculty on common health concerns, emergency protocols, and wellness initiatives. This may include training faculty and staff in first aid, CPR, and the use of emergency medications (e.g., EpiPens, inhalers).
  • Collaborate and notify other relevant faculty and staff regarding food allergies, special dietary requirements, school-wide crises, and development of individualized care plans for students with chronic conditions.
  • Effectively communicate and consult with faculty, staff, and administration regarding student health. This may include maintaining accurate daily nurse logs that details times and reasons for visits to the Health office, and providing a daily report to the Dean of Students and Attendance office.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Seek out and complete professional development to remain up-to-date on issues relevant to the Priory community
  • Develop and maintain healthcare policies and procedures for the school. This may include policies related to medication administration, emergency response, infection control, and staying up to date on all regulations and legal updates as they pertain to health care requirements and recordkeeping in a school setting.
  • Manage the First Aid and Emergency equipment to ensure the campus is properly equipped with first aid kits, AEDs, and rescue medications (including but not limited to Epi Pens and Narcan).
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with a valid state nursing license.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (preferred but not required).
  • Experience in pediatric, adolescent, or school nursing is strongly preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required; additional certifications in mental health or emergency care are a plus.
  • Understanding of adolescent development, mental health issues, and common pediatric conditions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with students, parents, faculty, and healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in emergency situations.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed in a boarding school environment.
  • Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) systems (Magnus preferred) and basic computer skills.
